China to cut PLA by 200,000 troops by 2005
BEIJING (AFP) Sep 01, 2003
China's top military leader Jiang Zemin announced Monday the reduction of the People's Liberation Army by 200,000 troops before 2005, Xinhua news agency reported.

Jiang told a meeting of the Central Military Commission the troop reduction would follow an earlier 500,000-man cut to the People's Liberation Army between 1996 and 2000, the report said.

According to the information office of the PLA, the Chinese army presently has 2.5 million soldiers and the reduction would reduce the standing army to 2.3 million.
