US sure of IAEA support for resolution on Iran
WASHINGTON (AFP) Sep 12, 2003
The United States expressed confidence Thursday that the International Atomic Energy Agency would adopt a resolution obliging Iran to submit to tight monitoring of its nuclear program.

The resolution, drafted by South Africa, was to be submitted to the IAEA in Vienna on Friday.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency Board will reconvene tomorrow, September 12, to consider this resolution, which we understand now commands wide support among board members," said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.

He said Secretary of State Colin Powell "himself has been working on this."

Powell spoke with South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on Wednesday about the draft, said Boucher, "and it now appears that the nations in Vienna have been able to come together on a text that will enjoy wide support."

A South African representative in Vienna said his country had withdrawn an earlier draft submitted Wednesday which would have obliged Teheran neither to delay nor halt to its uranium enrichment experiments.

Russia also indicated Thursday that it would support the resolution on Friday.
