Nearly 1,500 students at the Islamic University of Al-Azhar staged a protest on campus Wednesday to denounce the Israeli air strike against a Palestinian target in Syria, police said.No clashes were reported between police and students.
On Tuesday, some 2,500 students at Cairo University protested the raid overnight Saturday on what Israel said was a training camp used by Islamic Jihad, which had claimed responsibility for a massive suicide bombing in Haifa.
It was the first demonstration since students returned to university in late September.
Public demonstrations are banned in Egypt under an emergency law that has been in force since 1981, but they are tolerated on campus and within mosque compounds.
