Canada wants more data on US anti-missile shield before considering participation
OTTAWA (AFP) Jan 09, 2004
Canada will ask Washington for more data on its proposed anti-missile shield before negotiating for possible participation in the project, Defense Minister David Pratt said Thursday.

He said Canada may soon sign a "letter of intent" with the US government for access to classified documents heretofore denied it.

He told reporters that more information was needed before Canada could proceed.

Canada, initially opposed to the controversial missile shield project, has in recent months showed signs of rethinking its position for fear of being sidelined, although the government says it continues to oppose the "militarization of space."

Prime Minister Paul Martin is said to be planning to discuss the matter with President George W. Bush next week on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico.
