Britain set to block windfarms in nuclear detector fear: report
LONDON (AFP) Feb 27, 2004
Britain's Ministry of Defence is set to block plans to build three windfarms because vibrations from the turbines could interfere with equipment used to detect nuclear blasts around the world, The Times said Thursday.

The remote seismological station at Eskdalemuir in the western border country between Scotland and England monitors underground nuclear tests as part of Britain's obligations under an international nuclear treaty, said the newspaper.

The Ministry of Defence is set to object to building windfarms near the station, only one of three in the world, on the grounds that the vibrations are in the same spectrum as those from nuclear tests, The Times said.
