President Emomali Rakhmonov of the central Asian republic of Tajikistan has accused a general arrested last August of plotting a military coup, saying he had been behind eight bomb attacks including two outside the interior ministry.

The president of the former Soviet Republic bordering Afghanistan said Friday on television General Gaffor Mirzoyev, in custody on charges including murder, had been planning to overthrow him.

"General Gaffor Mirzoyev, the chief of the anti-drug agency who is today in prison, was preparing to launch a military coup d'etat," he said.

"This is a certified fact. Mirzoyev wanted to disturb the order and security of society."

He said the general, in custody for crimes allegedly committed while chief of the presidential guard between 1995 and earlier this year, was behind eight bomb attacks including two outside the interior ministry and the prosecutor's office early this year.

The president of the poverty-stricken state bordering Afghanistan said thousands of weapons had been uncovered in secret caches across the country.
