![]() EM4 last Thursday (August 19) announced the creation of a new division, EM4 Defense. The new division will focus on supplying the defense industry with its unique photonic and optoelectronic design and manufacturing services for commercial off the shelf (COTS) modules in its US based ITAR registered facility. EM4 Defense will help military contractors and manufacturers drive down costs, reduce risk, and compete more effectively by allowing them to purchase optoelectronic COTS modules and subsystems or to outsource the design and manufacture of key optoelectronic components, such as source lasers, high speed detectors, and pump lasers. These types of components are critical to the performance and responsiveness of next generation advanced defense systems. "We are creating EM4 Defense to respond to a growing need in the defense and aerospace industries for an agile US based active photonics supplier," said Basil Garabet, CEO of EM4. "EM4 Defense is uniquely positioned to provide vital services in this arena." EM4's core capabilities include the design, development, full-scale production and reliability testing of integrated active optoelectronics devices, such as directly modulated lasers, photodetectors and high power pump lasers. EM4 has developed proprietary tools that provide submicron fiber alignment and assembly that result in robust products able to operate in harsh environments. EM4 Defense is registered with the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls and is currently undergoing their International Traffic in Arms Regulation certification. EM4 Defense is also a member of numerous defense oriented professional organizations, such as the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, the Directed Energy Professional Society, and the Hanscom Representative Association. |
