Navy decommissions last OHP-class frigate
Everett, Wash. (UPI) Jan 27, 2015 - The U.S. Navy has decommissioned the USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60), the last guided missile frigate of the Oliver Hazard Perry class.

The frigate, with 28 years of service, was decommissioned late last week in a ceremony at Naval Station Everett, Wash.

The ship had returned from her last deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans last December, the Navy said.

Attending the decommissioning ceremony, in which Taps was played as sailors left the ship, was Retired Cmdr. Craig R. Heckert, the first commanding officer of Rodney M. Davis.

The Rodney M. Davis was the last frigate stationed at the facility.

The Navy said the ship is scheduled to be transferred for dismantlement on March 31.

Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates came into service in 1977, with 55 in the U.S. fleet. A number of decommissioned vessels of the class have been sold or donated to other countries.

Full life-cycle engineering and technical support for U.S. Navy communication and combat systems are to be provided by BAE Systems.

The five-year contract for the work was issued by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command and has an overall value of $146.7 million.

The initial year is worth $28.4 million, the company said.

"For 30 years our seasoned team has ensured that platforms, sensors, communications, and weapons systems aboard U.S. Navy ships are integrated and optimized for mission success," said DeEtte Gray, president of BAE Systems' Intelligence & Security sector. "In addition to aiding in mission readiness, BAE Systems' life-cycle services directly support NAVAIR's strategic cost-reduction initiatives."

BAE Systems said that under the contract it will integrate computers, communication systems, combat systems, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems on board U.S. Navy surface combatant vessels and at associated shore sites in the United States and abroad.

Additional details of the work were not disclosed.
