Washington (AFP) Feb 10, 2010 A fierce supporter of US aviation giant Boeing who co-authored a report on alleged spying by China is set to head a congressional panel that oversees the Pentagon's yearly budget, according to a top lawmaker. Democratic Representative Norm Dicks is likely to become chairman of the House subcommittee that steers military spending, taking over the post held by his late colleague John Murtha, Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said. "Norm Dicks of Washington State -- presumably, if it works as it has worked in the past -- will take the chairmanship of that committee," Hoyer told reporters on Tuesday. "I believe that he will lead that committee very ably and effectively and will be a very strong voice on behalf of the national security and our men and women in uniform." Dicks is considered one of Boeing's main champions in the US House of Representatives and co-authored a controversial 1999 congressional report alleging widespread Chinese spying and stealing of US nuclear secrets. The Washington Democrat would inherit the mantle of chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense from Murtha, a Vietnam war veteran and fierce critic of the Iraq war who died Monday at age 77 of complications from gallbladder surgery.
