The future Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS John Finn recently completed its alpha sea trials, Naval Sea Systems Command said. DDG 113 successfully wrapped the trials on Aug. 30 following three days at sea, NAVSEA said in a statement. The trials were conducted by Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. During the underway period, many of the ship's systems were tested to show they were properly installed and operational. John Finn successfully conducted a full power run and demonstrated key communication, damage control and navigation systems, as well as assorted hull, mechanical, electrical and propulsion applications, NAVSEA said. John Finn is the first new construction Arleigh Burke-class ship to go to sea in more than four years following the program's restart in 2010. It will be the 63rd ship in the class. The class of guided missile destroyers provide a range of capabilities in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface environments. The ship is 509-feet long, has a 59-foot waterline beam and a 31-foot navigational draft. DDG 113 will return to sea later next month for a second round of sea trails before a third underway period with members of the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey.
