An Israeli drone fired a missile at a Palestinian militant in northern Gaza after he fired a rocket toward the Jewish state on Monday, witnesses said.

They said Israeli tanks also opened fire from the Israeli side of the border, but no casualties were reported.

An army spokesman confirmed the air strike, saying a rocket was fired but had fallen short and landed on the Palestinian side.

Earlier, two Palestinian teenagers were wounded by Israeli tank fire, east of Maghazi refugee camp, in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said.

Dr Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services, said the incident took place early in the morning and that the victims were a teenage boy and girl, without giving their ages.

An army statement said a patrol "came under fire and retaliated" as it drove past the border fence in the same area.

The army also reported that a second rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel and exploded in a field without causing damages or casualties.

Four rockets have been fired since Friday night when three Islamic Jihad militants were killed in an Israeli air raid, according to the military. Two of them have landed inside Gaza.

The Islamic Jihad has vowed to seek revenge for what it said was a "cowardly crime."

Gaza's borders have been mostly quiet since Israel waged a devastating offensive at the turn of the year in a bid to halt rocket fire from the territory, which has been ruled by Hamas since June 2007.

Some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the three-week-long war, which ended on January 18.

More than 250 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza since the end of the offensive, according to the army.
