Russia says Iran not yet capable of intercontinental missiles
Moscow (AFP) Oct 17, 2007 Iran does not have the ability to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles anytime soon, Russia's army chief said Wednesday. "We continue to say this without equivocation and it is our deep conviction, founded on real knowledge of the situation in Iran concerning its capacity to create intercontinental ballistic missiles," General Yuri Baluyevsky said. "We do not see that it would be possible to do this in the near future or in the medium term, or that it is simply possible at all" for Iran, he added. Baluyevsky stressed that the United States has the opposite opinion. The Americans "are trying to convince us to the contrary," he said. Washington plans to deploy missile-tracking radar in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in Poland as part of a missile defence shield. Washington says the shield is needed to guard against threats from "rogue states" like Iran or North Korea. Moscow says the shield would threaten its own missile force.
