The BrahMos has a range of 280 kilometres (175 miles) and has been developed by Indian and Russian experts since 2001.

But Mukherjee refused to give details of whether New Delhi was in negotiations with any country for exports.

"Due to the sensitiveness involved with export of the missile, it is not possible to give details," he said.

Besides exports, the BrahMos missile would also be used by the armed forces of India and Russia, Mukherjee said in reply to a question posed by an Indian MP.

India has already fitted some of its warships with BrahMos missiles and is working on a version for its land forces.

A report in April said the Indian Air Force had begun work to arm its frontline fighter jets with the missile.

India has developed an array of ballistic missiles in its goal to achieve military self-reliance and eventually become a major player in the global arms bazaar.

Earlier this month, the first test of India's longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile, the Agni-III, failed.
