Ten people were killed and 15 injured when the roof of a clothing factory collapsed in northern China on Friday, the local government reported.

The incident occurred at the Jinbo Clothing Factory in Langfang, the city government said in a statement sent to AFP. Langfang is about 50 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Beijing.

"The roof of the clothing factory's machine shop suddenly collapsed at about 7:40 am," the statement said.

Over 500 rescuers rushed to the scene, including police, firemen and medical personnel, it said.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, it added.

All 15 of the injured have been sent to hospital, with eight of them seriously hurt, it said.

Deadly workplace accidents are common in China, where awareness and enforcement of basic safety practices is often lax.

Earlier this month in Langfang, five workers were killed and eight were injured when they were buried in the rubble of a building that collapsed as they were tearing it down, local press reports said.
