The death toll from Typhoon Talim rose to at least 72 in eastern China on Sunday with 29 people still missing, state media reported.

Torrential rains and landslides claimed 53 lives and left 12 missing in Anhui province, Xinhua news agency said.

Typhoon-inflicted disasters have affected some 5.21 million people in Anhui, forcing the relocation of more than 390,000 residents, according to the provincial production and disaster relief office.

Storm-related disasters also destroyed 33,600 houses and damaged more than 313,000 hectares (773,110 acres) of cropland in the province, causing 2.4 billion yuan (290 million dollars) in direct losses, they said.

At Wenzhou city in Zhejiang province, 14 people were confirmed killed while nine were missing in a series of thunderstorms, landslides and cave-ins brought about by Talim, Xinhua said.

Five people were killed and eight are missing in the province of Jiangxi, where more than 7,000 houses were destroyed and 210,000 hectares of crops damaged.

China reported days ago that floods had killed 1,024 people and left another 293 missing so far this year.
