The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammed ElBaradei, opened two days of talks Monday with Cuban officials on technical cooperation, the government said in a statement.
ElBaradei, the nuclear watchdog agency's director general, will exchange views on ties with Cuban authorities, said the brief statement carried by Granma, the official Communist Party newspaper.
ElBaradei will also visit "places of scientific interest," the statement said without being more specific. Sources said he was also to meet with the new Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez.
Cuba began building a nuclear power plant in Juaraga, Cienfuegos in 1980 with the help of the Soviet Union, but work halted after its collapse in 1991. Cuba later reached an agreement with Russia to preserve the site until work could be resumed.
ElBaradei's visit to Cuba was his last stop in a Latin American tour that included visits in Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia.
