The Czech ministry of the environment Monday decided to ban the burning of 80,000 tonnes of waste imported from Germany at a Prague incinerator, spokeswoman Karolina Sulova announced. "In this case it is about the import of waste for elimination, not for reuse, and this is banned by the law on waste," she explained.
The firm which wanted to import the waste for incineration can appeal the decision, but the minister of environment will have the final word, she added.
The ministry has so far banned the import of all waste for incineration into the country. The first ban dates back to 2004, when companies sought to make use of the incinerator at Liberec, in the north of the country.
German company, Munchner Recycling, has appealed a previous environment ministry ban dating from this period which prevented its export of 6,000 tonnes of waste. In the latest Prague case, another company wanted to import the waste.
