Joe Davis, NASA's chief of strategic communications, is leaving his position to join a private-sector public relations company, the space agency announced Wednesday.

Davis was responsible for setting overall communications and outreach policies for NASA, and he coordinated the offices of legislative, public and external affairs, as well as the education office. He served as a member of senior management and was one of Administrator Michael Griffin's top assistants.

"Joe has been a trusted member of my management team since the day I came back to NASA," Griffin said in a statement. "He has provided sound advice and counsel regarding every facet of NASA's strategic posture. We are sorry to see him leave, but he will always be welcome at NASA. Many of us have come to know Joe as a colleague, but I also count him a friend."

Prior to joining NASA, Davis was principal deputy director of public affairs for the Department of Energy, serving as the spokesman for the Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, and as a member of the department's management committee.

Before DOE, Davis served as communications director and spokesman for Abraham when he was in the U.S. Senate, as well as spokesman for the Senate Republican Conference.
