The death toll from a tropical storm that swept through the northern Philippines has risen to 44 with eight others believed killed at sea, authorities said Thursday.
Tropical storm Halong displaced more than a million people, destroyed tens of thousands of homes and caused 3.74 billion pesos (87 million dollars) in damage.
Some areas are still without electricity and water while roads buried by landslides or floods are being repaired, the civil defence office said.
It placed the updated toll at 44 dead and 24 injured. Eight fishermen remained missing five days later off the northern province of Pangasinan, it added.
