US President George W. Bush has picked a former television executive, Dorrance Smith, as his choice to replace the Pentagon's chief spokesman, Lawrence DiRita, the White House said Thursday.

If confirmed by the Senate, Smith would become assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.

Smith previously served as senior media adviser for the US-led coalition provisional authority in Iraq, and before that as a media adviser and consultant to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Earlier, Smith was an executive producer with ABC television, and served as assistant for media affairs to Bush's father, former president George Bush.
