Orbital Sciences has completed the purchase of Harris Corporation¿s FleetLynx transit management systems product line. The FleetLynx purchase complements Orbital¿s existing satellite-based transit system capabilities, providing a complete suite of products for transit operations of all sizes.

The FleetLynx products will be offered through Orbital¿s Transportation Management Systems (TMS) Division, the world¿s leading supplier of automatic vehicle location (AVL) and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems for the transit industry with more than 30 transit properties deployed or under construction.

Orbital¿s TMS transit products use satellite-based location technologies and terrestrial communications systems to enable local and regional transportation authorities to better manage mass transit bus and rail systems.

At a moment¿s notice, a dispatcher can pinpoint the location of a specific vehicle and respond to an emergency situation, send a repair crew or notify passengers of a delay.

Orbital¿s TMS products are currently in use in many of the country¿s largest metropolitan areas, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston and Denver, and are now poised to serve small- to medium-sized markets with the addition of the FleetLynx product.

"The FleetLynx product line provides a proven, full-featured and cost-effective Windows NT-based fleet management solution for small- to mid-sized transit authorities," said Mr. David L. Mathisen, Vice President and General Manager of Orbital¿s TMS Division. "In addition, we plan to incorporate various FleetLynx technologies into some of our existing systems."
