Kim Jong Il Gets A Birthday Bonanza...Heating Oil
Seoul (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
Massive energy and economic aid which would be given to North Korea under Tuesday's nuclear deal is a birthday bonanza for supreme leader Kim Jong Il, who has suffered from pressure and sanctions following Pyongyang's nuclear test last October. The key steps requiring North Korea to reveal the full extent of its nuclear program, dismantle all facilities and give up its atomic arsenal are to be dealt with in later phases -- a process critics say is unlikely to succeed given Pyongyang's poor record of honoring agreements.

US Defends North Korea Nuclear Deal As Good First Step
Washington (AFP) Feb 13, 2007
The United States hailed a landmark deal struck with North Korea Tuesday to rein in its nuclear program as a sign the erratic communist regime may finally be ready to abandon its 30-year quest to be a nuclear power. But US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice cautioned that tough negotiations remain ahead for the complex multi-phase agreement.

Iran And Barbara Ann Could Get A Replay
Washington (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
The prestigious magazine The Economist, not MAD magazine, has a $2.2 billion B2B stealth bomber on its cover this week headlined "Next stop Iran?"

False Steps On Iran
Moscow (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
Politicians often say things they don't really mean. But sometimes they let themselves loose and start telling the truth, which only brings more trouble. The blunders committed by U.S. President George W. Bush no longer surprise anyone.

  Facing Western Supremacy
Delhi (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
The foreign ministers of the three giants of the Asian landmass -- Russia, China and India -- will meet Feb. 14 in New Delhi to advance an old proposal for a Trilateral Global Alliance that would effectively exclude the West from a position of superiority in Asia, before achieving the same purpose in Africa and South America.

Putin Reclaims Russian Clout
Berlin (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
The anti-U.S., anti-NATO speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin has unsettled European officials. But observers should not be surprised; his words come as part of a deliberate effort to reclaim lost Russian clout, in light of the country's recent rise as an energy superpower and the West's failure to resolve crises in the Middle East.

Center Of World Power Shifting To Asia
Beijing (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
As Yang Liwei climbed into his spaceship in the middle of the Gobi Dessert one early morning in 2003, much of the world prepared to watch out for the tail of China's spaceship flashing through the sky. China was making a statement to the world. And now more than just China's spaceship should be catching our attention.

Israeli Arrow Hits Missile At Night
Washington (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
Israel carried out another successful test of its Arrow anti-ballistic missile, or ABM, interceptor Sunday. The Arrow is widely regarded as the best high altitude ABM interceptor in the world. The latest test marked the second successful interception and destruction by the Arrow of a target missile configured to perform like an Iranian Shihab-3 intermediate range ballistic missile.

Waking The Military Dinosaur
Washington (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
Perhaps the most serious deficiency in the American armed forces is the fact that both ground forces, the U.S. Army and the United States Marine Corps, remain Second Generation military organizations (so do the U.S. Navy and Air Force, but in the kinds of wars we are likely to fight, they don't much matter).

Iraq Army Deploying On Time
Baghdad (UPI) Feb 13, 2007
A top U.S. general says that the Iraqi army brigades tapped for duty in the Baghdad troop surge have shown up on time and with -- for the most part -- the promised number of soldiers. "This movement of these three brigades and two separate battalions into Baghdad to our way of looking at it has gone very well," said Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey, commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, in an interview Monday with United Press International.

Absence Of US-China Military Dialogue Triggers Worries In US
Washington (AFP) Feb 13, 2007
Despite years of cajoling, China is hesitant to have a defense dialogue with the United States, fuelling fears in Washington of the prospect of a conflict as the Asian giant flexes its military muscle.

US Playing Anti-Russian Card To Raise Defense Spending
Amman (RIA Novosti) Feb 14, 2007
President Vladimir Putin accused the United States of 'playing the anti-Russian card' to solve its domestic problems and secure more substantial defense spending. "I have an impression that some partners are promoting themselves and have started using the non-existent Russian threat to get more money from the U.S. Congress for military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the expensive missile defense project," Putin said during his visit to Jordan, adding that it was not Russia's problem.

Pirate TV Fantasy World Hooks Cubans Who Tune In To Tune Out
Havana (AFP) Feb 13, 2007
It may be educational, but Cuban state television is unbearable, if you ask Ivette, a homemaker hooked on soap operas she watches on an illegal cable signal offering home delivery of a capitalist fantasy world. "I love to see those fancy women, all done up in hairdos and makeup, and those studs," said the 35-year-old.
