Europe Might Consider Own Missile Defence System

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday said Europe was considering its own missile defence system in parallel to a shield the United States wants to put up in Eastern Europe. But Steinmeier, who has criticized the United States for not discussing its planned missile shield with Russia, said acknowledged that Europe does not yet have the technological know-how to build a rival to the US system.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticised the United States on its plan to station missiles for a defence shield in central Europe, in an interview to be published Monday. Steinmeier told the daily Handelsblatt that Washington would have been better advised to consult with all the countries that would be affected by the move, including Russia.

Russian Threat Over US Missile Shield Uncalled For Says NATO

Russia's threats to target with ballistic missiles any Polish or Czech sites involved in a future US missile defence system are "uncalled for," a NATO spokesman said Monday. Earlier Monday General Nikolai Solovtsov, head of Russia's strategic missile force, threatened a tough response if the United States went ahead with its plan to site a missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Poles And Czechs To Cooperate In US Missile Talks

Poland and the Czech Republic said Monday they would work together in talks with Washington on the missile defence shield it wants to set up in central Europe, even as Russia threatened retaliation. "We are trying to set up an information-sharing system for discussions on this proposal," Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said during a press conference with his Polish counterpart Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

Iran may be able to enrich uranium on a mass scale in just six months, but it could still be 10 years away from the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, the chief UN monitor said in remarks published Monday. Mohamed ElBaradei, who heads the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told the Financial Times that since August Iran has been using centrifuges at a pilot plant in the town of Natanz to enrich uranium.

Iran Launches War Games With Missile Tests

Iran's ideological army, the elite Revolutionary Guards, launched three days of war games on Monday with a succession of missile tests aimed at improving defensive capabilities. The "Power Manoeuvre" exercises involving 3,000 units of the elite force in 16 of Iran's 30 provinces come at a time of mounting tension with the United States over Iran's nuclear programme and allegations it is arming militias in Iraq.

US Panel Doubts North Korea Will Give Up Nuclear Weapons

Four days after a landmark nuclear accord with North Korea, an independent US report warned Friday that the Stalinist state's leader, Kim Jong-Il, continues to distrust Washington and views US aid as a "poison apple." The report by an influential panel of Asia specialists also ruled out the possibility of Kim emulating China's former paramount leader Deng Xiaoping in embracing economic reforms to open up reclusive and impoverished North Korea.

Pakistan Troops To Keep Up Aggressive Ritual At Indian Border

Pakistani troops will continue an aggressive military ceremony at a border crossing with rival India because it is a tradition and attracts tourists, officials said Saturday. Indian border guards announced in November they would tone down their ceremony performed every evening at the Wagah border post amid warming relations between the nuclear-armed South Asia rivals.

Iraqi Insurgents Have Strategy To Target US Helicopters

Documents captured from Iraqi insurgents indicate that some of the recent fatal attacks against US helicopters are a result of a carefully planned strategy to focus on downing coalition aircraft, The New York Times reported on its website Saturday. Citing unnamed American officials, the newspaper said the strategy has been carried out by mounting coordinated assaults with machine guns, rockets and surface-to-air missiles.

US Deploys Stealth Fighters In Japan

The US flew its latest stealth fighter jets into Japan on Saturday for their first overseas deployment in a show of strength days after North Korea signed a deal on its nuclear programme. Two F-22A Raptors, which can evade radar detection at supersonic speeds, touched down on the southern island of Okinawa, strategically located near the Korean peninsula and the Taiwan Strait.

Biggest Mideast Arms Fair Opens In UAE

The Middle East's biggest arms fair, IDEX-2007, opened in the United Arab Emirates Sunday with hundreds of manufacturers displaying state-of-the-art weaponry to oil-rich monarchies that are keen on upgrading their armed forces. The eighth bi-annual International Defence Exhibition, which was first held in 1993, was opened by UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.
