US Missile Shield Talks Could Take Several Years
Yerevan, Armenia (RIA Novosti) Feb 26, 2007
Future talks on the deployment of a U.S. missile defense base in Poland could take several years, Poland's foreign minister said Monday. In January, the United States approached Poland and the Czech Republic, former Central European Soviet allies and now members of the European Union and NATO, with a request to host elements of the missile defense system. Washington plans to build a radar installation in the Czech Republic and a missile interceptor base in Poland in the next five years.

US Says Missile Shield In Europe Could Evolve In Future
Washington (RIA Novosti) Feb 27, 2007
The U.S. administration said Friday that elements of the U.S. missile defense system could be placed in the future not only in Poland and the Czech Republic but also in other countries. Washington has earlier announced plans to deploy elements of its global anti-missile shield in Central Europe to shoot down ballistic missiles that could be launched by the so-called "rogue regimes," including Iran and North Korea.

Learning From Sweden The Meaning Of Military Intelligence
Washington (UPI) Feb 26, 2007
Sometimes, single words can say more than whole essays. The Swedish captain in the Fourth Generation War seminar I lead at for the U.S. Marine Corps at Quantico, Va. recently introduced me to such a word. It is the Swedish word for military intelligence: underrattelser. The literal translation of underrattelser is "correction from below."

The Russia That Can Say No
Washington (UPI) Feb 26, 2007
U.S. President George W. Bush did not deliberately set out to make Russia a formidable opponent: He just took her for granted. In particular, Bush and his top policymakers have repeatedly assumed that reasonable negotiations with Russia meant doing exactly what they wanted to do and expecting the Russians to grumble a bit but passively accept it without ever pushing back.

Work Begins On New Iran Resolution As Old Hands Warn Of Escalation
London (AFP) Feb 26, 2007
Six key world powers began work Monday at a meeting in London on a new United Nations Security Council resolution designed to curb defiant Iran's nuclear ambitions, the chair of the talks said. Representatives from Germany and the five permanent members of the Security Council -- the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia -- will reconvene Thursday to discuss the "sanctions resolution", the US state department said.

Iran Ready For US Talks Without Preconditions
Tehran (AFP) Feb 26, 2007
Iran said on Monday it would be ready to examine positively a request by its arch-enemy the United States for talks but would not accept halting sensitive nuclear activities as a precondition. "If the United States presents a request for negotiations through the official channels and it appears these negotiations are constructive and logical, we are ready to examine this request with a positive eye," chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani told the IRNA agency.

Japan Urges North Korea To Come Clean On Uranium
Tokyo (AFP) Feb 26, 2007
Japan urged North Korea Monday to come clean on its suspected secret atomic programme based on enriched uranium after reaching a breakthrough nuclear deal at six-nation talks. The February 13 agreement, which initially binds North Korea to shut key nuclear facilities in exchange for energy aid, requires Pyongyang to produce a list of all nuclear programmes.

North Korean Nuclear Envoys Softened Weapons Stance
Tokyo (AFP) Feb 26, 2007
Diplomats who reached a breakthrough agreement with North Korea earlier this month backed down on demanding Pyongyang give up nuclear weapons immediately, a Japanese press report said Monday. A first draft at the six-nation talks in Beijing had called on North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons and the facilities which produce them as "initial" steps in return for fuel aid, Kyodo News reported.

The Other Gulf War
Washington (UPI) Feb 26, 2007
After nearly six weeks of heavy aerial and artillery bombardment of Iraqi positions the ground war for the liberation of Kuwait began. Dubbed Operation Desert Storm, the war ended just over four days after it started -- or 100 hours later -- 16 years ago this Wednesday. When you compare Desert Storm to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, well, it just doesn't compare. To begin with, this war has been going on for about 34,560 hours, and there is no end in sight.

US Doubts Iranian Space Launch Claim
Washington (AFP) Feb 26, 2007
The US military has no evidence to corroborate an Iranian claim that it fired a rocket into space and suspects that the event never happened, a US defense official said Monday. Iranian space officials said Sunday they launched a "sounding rocket" into space for research purposes, reaching an altitude of 150 kilometers (93 miles). They said the rocket did not go into orbit.

Crime Fighting Potential For Computerised Lip-Reading
Norwich UK (SPX) Feb 22, 2007
Researchers at the University of East Anglia are about to embark on an innovative new project to develop computer lip-reading systems that could be used for fighting crime. The three-year project, which starts next month, will collect data for lip-reading and use it to create machines that automatically convert videos of lip-motions into text. It builds on work already carried out at UEA to develop state-of-the-art speech reading systems.
