LockMart Awarded $979,175,217 For Aegis BMD Signal Processor

The U.S. Department of Defense's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) today awarded Lockheed Martin $979,175,217 for continued development and evolution of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Weapon System. Capability improvements planned in the next phase of Aegis BMD include equipment and computer program development and incorporation of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Signal Processor (Aegis BSP) into the AN/SPY-1 radar, which as a system provides an advanced discrimination capability to defeat more complex ballistic missile threats.

Moscow Baffled By US Plans For European Missile Defense

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has expressed surprise at Moscow's sharp criticism of American plans to deploy anti-ballistic-missile (ABM) interceptors in Poland and early-warning radars in the Czech Republic. "The idea that we somehow surprised them [Russians] about missile defense and then to go and say these things about Poland and the Czech Republic was unnecessary and unwarranted," Rice said in a February 25 interview on Fox News.

Ballistic Missile Defense Base Talks Could Take Years

The Bush administration is getting what appear to be mixed signals from Poland about its plans to deploy anti-ballistic missile interceptor defenses on Polish soil. On the one hand, Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga cautioned Monday during a visit to the Armenian capital Yerevan that negotiations about putting a U.S. BMD base on Polish soil could take years.

Raytheon Awarded Phalanx Performance Based Logistics Contract

Raytheon has been awarded a five-year, $169.9 million Performance Based Logistics contract to manage the spare parts for the U.S. Navy's Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. More than 1,100 part numbers amounting to more than 30,000 individual Phalanx parts are warehoused in Louisville where, for a firm-fixed-price, Raytheon, in partnership with United Parcel Service Supply Chain Solutions, guarantees delivery of spares to drop points within an agreed-to time frame.

  Gates Calls On Congress To Fund IED Research

Defense leaders yesterday called on Congress to approve a further $2.4 billion to defeat the biggest killer of Americans in the Middle East: the improvised explosive device. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Peter Pace told the Senate Appropriations Committee that the fiscal 2007 emergency supplemental request includes money to fund research into defeating IEDs.

Hunter-Viper Strike Team Completes Successful Missile Range Tests

Northrop Grumman's Hunter-Viper Strike weapon system successfully destroyed a series of moving and stationary targets in testing at the White Sands Missile Range in January. The Viper Strike weapons were guided to their targets by the Hunter unmanned aerial vehicle's (UAV) laser targeting system. The weapons tests were conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office (PEO) for Aviation and the PEO for Missiles and Space.

The top US negotiator with North Korea insisted Wednesday that Washington would pursue a crackdown on counterfeiting of US currency and other illicit dealings by Pyongyang despite moves towards normalization with the communist regime. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill told a congressional panel that the government was "prepared to resolve" a key financial dispute with North Korea as part of a deal to end that country's nuclear program.
