Beijing (AFP) March 02, 2007
China demanded Friday the United States scrap a planned sale of hundreds of missiles to Taiwan, warning the deal would harm regional stability and bilateral ties. VTB Decision To Sell EADS Stake Hinges On Market Situation
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 05, 2007
Vneshtorgbank (VTB), Russia's state-run foreign-trade bank, said Friday its further participation in the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) will depend on the market situation. EADS, a parent company of aircraft-maker Airbus, announced plans earlier this week to cut 10,000 jobs and sell or close six of its 16 plants, following FedEx Corp.'s November decision to cancel its order for 10 A380 freighters, leaving Airbus with only 10 orders from one remaining customer, United Parcel Service Inc.

US To Build Nuclear Warhead Using New Design
Washington (AFP) March 02, 2007
The United States said Friday it had selected the design of next-generation nuclear warheads, a step toward the construction of new bombs for the sea-based nuclear arsenal to replace aging Cold War-era stock. The government chose a design by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California over a competing design by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico for the project, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said in a statement.

Islamabad (AFP) Mar 03, 2007
Pakistan on Saturday test-fired a short-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile, its second test within eight days, the military said. The surface-to-surface Abdali has a range of 200 kilometers (125 miles) and is one of the earliest missile systems developed by Pakistan. "The test was aimed at validation of the desired technical parameters which has been successfully achieved," the military said in a statement.

US Missile Shield In Ukraine And Caucasus Could Spark Regional Crisis
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 05, 2007
Including Ukraine and the Caucasus nations into a U.S. air-defense system could cause another internal political crisis in these countries, a senior Russian MP said Friday. A senior Pentagon official said Thursday that the United States "would like to place a radar base in the Caucasus" amid earlier reports of plans to deploy elements of a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, which have further strained relations between the U.S. and Russia.

US And North Korea Begin Thaw In Relations
Washington (AFP) Mar 05, 2007
Landmark US-North Korea talks on normalizing relations were to get underway Monday amid questions in Washington over whether US intelligence had exaggerated Pyongyang's nuclear threat. US officials were cautioning that the talks in New York are only a small first step towards establishing diplomatic ties and that North Korea needs to meet a series of denuclearization benchmarks in order to end a half century of enmity between the two states.

Spy Agency Defends Intelligence On North Korea Nuclear Program
Washington (AFP) Mar 04, 2007
Washington's espionage establishment on Sunday defended US intelligence on North Korea, amid reports that the US administration had backpedaled on earlier assessments of Pyongyang's nuclear program. Joseph De Trani, North Korea mission manager for the Director of National Intelligence, complained in a written statement about "considerable misinterpretation of the intelligence community's view of North Korean efforts to pursue a uranium enrichment capability."

Baghdad Crackdown Making Slow Progress
Washington (AFP) Mar 04, 2007
The number two US military commander in Iraq said Sunday that the security crackdown in Baghdad was slowly progressing but that it would take at least six to nine months to hand security over to Iraqis. Major General Raymond Odierno told CNN television the new security plan, announced by President George W. Bush on January 10, was still in the "very early stages" but that operations had already begun.

Russian Air Defense To Be Based On S-300 And S-400 Systems
Tver (RIA Novosti) Mar 05, 2007
Russia's fifth-generation air defense missile system will be developed on the basis of existing S-300 and S-400 air defense complexes, the Air Force commander said Friday. "The system will undoubtedly inherit the best features of the S-300 and S-400 systems, but will be designed using advanced technology," Army General Vladimir Mikhailov said. The new missile system will combine elements of air, missile and space defenses, and will be developed by the Almaz-Antei air defense consortium.

Attacking Iran Could Speed Up Nuclear Program
London (AFP) Mar 05, 2007
Pre-emptive military strikes on Iran could accelerate rather than hinder Tehran's production of atomic weapons, a report by a British global security think-tank said Monday. Backed by the former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq, Hans Blix, the Oxford Research Group said Iran could respond to an attack by launching a "crash programme" and build a crude nuclear device within months.
