Rice Cuts No Ice In Moscow Moscow (UPI) March 02, 2007 U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has expressed surprise at Moscow's sharp criticism of American plans to deploy anti-ballistic-missile interceptors in Poland and early-warning radars in the Czech Republic. "The idea that we somehow surprised them [Russians] about missile defense and then to go and say these things about Poland and the Czech Republic, independent countries, NATO members, was, I think, unnecessary and unwarranted," Rice said in a Feb. 25 interview on Fox News. Russia Ready To Resume Military Aid To Afghanistan Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 06, 2007 Russia is willing to discuss the resumption of military aid to Afghanistan during the upcoming visit of the country's defense minister to Moscow, a Russian diplomat said Monday. "In the light of increasing Taliban and Al-Qaeda activities, President Karzai and the Afghan government have asked Russia to resume supplies of military equipment [to Afghanistan]," said Alexander Maryasov, a department head at the Foreign Ministry. How Multipolar Is Moscow Washington (UPI) March 02, 2007 Russian President Vladimir Putin has frequently called for the creation of a "multipolar" world in order to limit America's ability to act unilaterally without consulting others, especially him. Putin has encouraged others, including the European Union and China, to join him in opposing American hegemony. Indeed, China and several EU governments, most notably France, have also called for the creation of a multipolar world and an end to the American-dominated "unipolar" one. |
Russia Does Not Want Another Cold War Moscow (RIA Novosti ) Mar 06, 2007 Authors who are critical of Russia's current political structure often write that the Kremlin has no proper foreign policy, or rather that its policy is so vague, anonymous, and insufficiently centralized that it can only be described as PR actions. That view is shared by people across the ideological spectrum. A few words about ideology. The system of government in Russia is based on clans - or tribes, if you like. Of Course The Enemy Can Think Washington (UPI) March 02, 2007 One of the rituals attending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, when our opponents score a goal, is for an American general to materialize before the press and announce, in his best manner, that "we face a thinking enemy." Wow. Who ever would have imagined that the enemy might think and learn? The latest example followed the insurgents' success in shooting down seven American helicopters in Iraq. Russia Navy Boss Urges Submarine Navigation Agreement Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 06, 2007 Russia has called for an international agreement on the safety of submarine navigation to be signed soon, the Navy commander-in-chief said Monday. "We have an agreement with 14 countries to prevent incidents at sea covering territory outside our waters. Our Navy meticulously observes it. We would now like to sign agreements to ensure submarine navigational safety" Adm. Vladimir Masorin said. But he said the United States was reluctant to sign. |

Terror Threat Still There Arlington VA (UPI) March 05, 2007 Back in the 1960s, before Britney and Ludicris were even born, Frank Zappa was the most outrageous act in American popular music. Zappa delighted in lampooning the complacency of middle-class America, most memorably in his a capella song, "It Can't Happen Here." The message of the song was that the worst nightmares of white suburbia -- anarchy, drugs, interracial dating -- really could happen here. Rumsfeld Men Fall In Scandal Washington (UPI) March 05, 2007 New U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has dealt with the health care scandal at Walter Reed Hospital in a way dramatically different from the leadership style of his predecessor Donald Rumsfeld. On March 1, U.S. Secretary of the Army Francis Harvey fired Walter Reed Hospital's director, Army Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman and replaced him with Maj. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, who is the brother of outgoing Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker. |
Russian Bombers Could Suppress US Missile Shield Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 06, 2007 Russia's strategic aviation has sufficient potential to suppress elements of a U.S. missile defense shield should it be deployed in Central Europe, the commander of the Strategic Air Force said Monday. "Missile shield elements, which are located in silos, are very vulnerable and have weak defenses," Lieutenant-General Igor Khvorov said. "Therefore, all aircraft deployed by [Russian] strategic aviation can either apply electronic counter-measures against them or physically destroy them." Russia Revises Military Doctrine To Reflect Global Changes Moscow (RIA Novosti) Mar 06, 2007 Russia is preparing a new draft of its military doctrine to reflect the growing importance of the use of force in foreign polices conducted by leading global powers, the Security Council said Monday. "The analysis of the situation on the global arena points to the increasing demand for forcible actions in the policies conducted by the leading countries," the council said in a statement. China Great Global Step Forward Washington (UPI) March 02, 2007 If the ability to move global markets is a gauge to measure a country's global influence, then China has certainly earned its star this week. The question remains, however, whether or not the country is blossoming into a mature financial market that can attract those seeking steady investment returns, or whether it remains a place only for the strong of heart who can afford to take hefty financial losses at times. |
