Russian Arms Exports Break Records

Russia exported $8 billion worth of weapons and hardware in 2006, according to Mikhail Dmitriyev, director of Russia's Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service. Arms exports amounted to $6.5 billion and spare parts and military services to $1.5 billion. This is more than the preliminary figure for arms exports as of late 2006, estimated at $6.3 billion, already a substantial increase on the 2005 figure of $6.226 billion.

New Hellfire-Compatible Guided Rocket Can Defeat Targets In Urban Operations

Lockheed Martin today unveiled DAGR, a weapon developed with company funding to defeat targets in urban operations, while minimizing collateral damage. DAGR is a 2.75-inch guided rocket system that is fully compatible with the fielded and combat-proven Hellfire II missile.

Airmen Receive Cutting-Edge Satellite Training

As a satellite systems crew chief, Staff Sgt. Lori Browning has a job that is out of this world. She is currently receiving training on the Space Based Infrared Systems, or SBIRS, that is scheduled to become operational sometime next year. Sergeant Browning is part of the first class that is being trained on the system in the 460th Operations Detachment 1 at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo.

The US navy showed off its newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Hong Kong Wednesday, as the fleet's commander refused to be drawn on whether the vessel will be boosting the US military build-up in the Gulf. The United States has in recent months positioned two carrier groups in the Gulf region, its biggest deployment in the area since before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, raising speculation about a possible US strike against Iran.

Aerojet To Build THAAD Boost Motors

The Aerojet aerospace company in California is about to commence the building of boost motors for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, the Sacramento Business Journal reported Monday.

US Offers Reassurance Over Missile Shield Plan As Technical Cooperation Hinted At

The head of the United States Missile Defence Agency moved to reassure Russia Wednesday over a planned missile defence system, parts of which could be sited in eastern Europe. Russia has reacted angrily to a US announcement in January that Washington had started talks with Poland and the Czech Republic on installing a radar and 10 missile interceptors. But Lieutenant General Trey Obering told the Financial Times that Russia had no cause for alarm.

Raytheon To Pursue Air Force Upgrade For NextGen GPS Control Segment

Raytheon will lead an industry team in pursuit of the next generation Global Positioning System Control Segment (OCX), a program to provide command, control, and mission support for current GPS Block II and III satellites as well as support to existing and new interfaces. The initial selection of two competitors is scheduled for late fiscal year 2007.

Normalization Of US-North Korea Ties Still A Long Way Off

The United States and North Korea have expressed optimism after landmark talks on normalization of ties, but much remains to be done before they can thaw icy relations and nail down a nuclear agreement. The talks in New York were aimed at smoothing implementation of an aid-for-disarmament agreement reached with Pyongyang on February 13 in six-nation talks that also included South Korea, Japan, Russia and China.

  Russia Denies Iran Claim That Bushehr Debt Issue Resolved

Russia has refuted Iran's claim Monday that the countries had resolved all outstanding financial issues regarding the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in south Iran. Russian specialists are completing the construction of Iran's first NPP under a $1 billion contract signed in 1995, but Russia claimed last month that Iran had an unpaid debt for its construction services, and said that as a result construction might take longer than previously expected.

US Calls For Immediate Notification Of Sensitive Iranian Nuclear Work

The United States called Wednesday on the UN atomic agency to give immediate notification if Iran moves ahead on enriching uranium at a huge underground site where it could do weapons-related work. US ambassador Gregory Schulte said International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei should inform the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors "immediately... should Iran introduce nuclear material into any centrifuges in its underground plant" in Natanz.

Israeli Air Force Unveils Long-Range Drone

The Israeli air force on Wednesday unveiled its first long-range unmanned aerial vehicle reportedly capable of carrying out reconnaissance missions thousands of kilometres away. The Heron is "a major leap forward for the Israel Defence Forces and is capable of tackling a variety of threats Israel is facing today," air force chief Major General Eliezer Shkedi told AFP at the drone's unveiling ceremony at Palmahim air force base in the centre of the country.
