Maliki seized control of Iraq security
Baghdad (UPI) Oct 12, 2009
For months, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been systematically amassing control of Iraq's intelligence and security services in the classic mold of Arab strongmen. His critics, and many ordinary Iraqis, see this as a bid to assume "quasi-dictatorial" powers in the manner of Saddam Hussein. This view has been strengthened by Maliki's recent break away from the ... more

    Walker's World: Obama's absurd prize
    London (UPI) Oct 12, 2009
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has piled him high with lemons, and even though President Barack Obama side-stepped the absurdity as best he could, he has yet to find the real American answer -- turning the Nobel lemons into lemonade. It's fine for Obama to say he's awed and unworthy and he sees it as an inspiration to do better. But his record so far is painfully thin. His secretary of ... more
