India carried out a night-time test of a nuclear-capable, medium-range ballistic missile off its eastern coast on Monday, a defence official said. The surface-to-surface Agni-II, which can deliver a nuclear warhead to targets within a range of 2,500 kilometres (1,560 miles), was fired from a mobile rail launcher on Wheeler Island off the coast of Orissa state at 7:50pm (1420 GMT). ... read more

China slams 'prejudiced' US report on espionage
Beijing (AFP) Nov 23, 2009
China slammed on Monday a US government report on its alleged spying activities as "full of prejudice," untrue and aimed at undermining warming ties. The report issued last week by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission warned that China was sharply stepping up espionage against the United States and becoming more sophisticated in recruiting spies. "The report takes no ... more

Iran's key sites exposed without S-300s
Tehran (UPI) Nov 23, 2009
The large-scale exercises Iran is currently conducting to test its air-defense network and assess its ability to protect its nuclear facilities appear to be little more than a show of defiance against the United States, Israel and Russia, its longtime key arms supplier. Without the advanced S-300PMU missiles that a fickle Moscow refuses to deliver, presumably because the Kremlin finds ... more

Japan mulls F-35 purchase as next main fighter jet: report
Tokyo (AFP) Nov 23, 2009
Japan is considering buying around 40 F-35 fighter jets as the future mainstay of the nation's air force, it was reported Monday. Japan has officially been pacifist since World War II but has been gradually expanding the role of its military, in part due to concern over nuclear-armed North Korea and China's continued military growth. The defence ministry will likely seek funds in the ... more

    Baghdad (AFP) Nov 22, 2009
Iraq on Sunday for the first time said that the bombers who killed more than 150 people in Baghdad on October 25 came from neighbouring Syria, but steered well clear of accusing Damascus of collusion. "The group came from Syria but we are not accusing Syria again," said government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh on state television. His comments followed the broadcast of confessions from three ... more

Iraq vote in fresh doubt as new bill faces veto
    Baghdad (AFP) Nov 23, 2009
Iraq's upcoming general election will be delayed, a top MP warned, because an amended electoral law agreed on Monday is likely to be vetoed for a second time by the country's Sunni vice president. The deal increases the number of parliamentary seats in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region compared with an earlier version of the bill, which Tareq al-Hashemi vetoed, but reduces the figure for ... more
