Seoul (AFP) Jan 24, 2010
North Korea on Sunday lashed out at South Korea's plan to launch a "preemptive strike" to thwart any nuclear attack from Pyongyang as an "open declaration of war," state media said. The North's General Staff of the Korean People's Army said the South Korean defence chief's recent remarks on a preemptive strike had created a "grave situation" which could lead to war "at any moment." "They will take prompt and decisive military actions against any attempt of the South Korean puppet authorities. ... read more

An attack by a Western drone aircraft in Afghanistan killed 15 militants of Turkish and Chinese Uighur origin, a Turkish militant website was quoted as saying on Saturday. The Islamist website, quoted by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group which monitors such sites, said the attack took place on January 19. Moscow (AFP) Jan 20, 2010
US military planes are flying over Russia with supplies for Afghanistan under a deal signed last summer, the US ambassador to Moscow said Wednesday, denying claims that the deal had broken down. Baghdad (AFP) Jan 24, 2010
A bomb detection device newly banned from export in Britain and labelled useless by US forces was still being used at checkpoints in Baghdad on Sunday, to a mixture of confidence and disbelief. "We know it doesn't work and that it has been banned but we are continuing to use it," an Iraqi army lieutenant, shaking his head amid busy traffic, told an AFP correspondent in the capital. Vietnam tops Russia's arms client list
Hanoi, Vietnam (UPI) Jan 22, 2009
Vietnam is now officially Russia's biggest arms client thanks to recent orders for six Kilo-class submarines and 12 Su-30 fighter jets, according to a Moscow-based think tank. Vietnam's deal for its first submarines is Russia's second-biggest contract for subs in the post-Soviet period, after a 2002 contract with China for eight submarines, said the independent Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies that monitors Russian military exports.
