Study says sheltering better nuclear plan
Washington (UPI) Sep 7, 2010
A U.S. study says that in a nuclear detonation people in large cities would be better off sheltering in place rather than trying to evacuate immediately. Researchers at Stanford University say that unless a lengthy warning period is provided, clogged exit roads would pose more significant risks by exposing evacuees to radiation than if people were to remain in place at the center of large buildings or in basements, a release from the Society for Risk Analysis says. Brussels (AFP) Sept 7, 2010
Coalition troops hope to root out the Taliban insurgency from districts around the key southern Afghan city of Kandahar by the end of November, the NATO commander in southern Afghanistan said Tuesday. Between 15,000 and 17,000 Afghan forces and 15,000 international troops will be involved in a mission to crush an estimated 500 to 800 insurgents in Arghandab, Zhari and Panjwaii, said British ... more

Blair defends Iraq war and praises Bush
London (UPI) Sep 7, 2010
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in his new book, heaps praise on George W. Bush and remains steadfast that taking Britain to war in Iraq was right, a decision that seriously damaged his political reputation at home. Bush is "very smart - a true idealist," who had "immense simplicity in how he saw the world," Blair wrote in 'A Journey,' his newly released memoir. "Right or wro ... more

Major US veterans group condemns planned Koran burning
Washington (AFP) Sept 7, 2010
A top US veterans group on Tuesday blasted a planned Korean burning to mark nine years since the September 11th strikes as the work of "religious extremists" whose gesture would endanger US forces. Outside View: Obama's plan and job drought
College Park, Md. (UPI) Sep 7, 2010
With congressional Democrats facing a November shellacking, U.S. President Barack Obama is floating new programs to aid troubled homeowners and create jobs that will prove costly and ineffective. Despite rock-bottom interest rates, residential sales are at historic lows and 2 million families face foreclosure this year, because Americans need decent jobs to buy homes and pay mortgages. With Obama's $787 billion stimulus package at maximum force, his healthcare reforms inexorably socializ ... read more
