Alternative Energy Capability Demonstrated During Marine Exercise
Tewksbury MA (SPX) Oct 26, 2010 Raytheon has completed all phases of the U.S. Marine Corps' Experimental Forward Operating Base, or ExFOB, program. The Marines are testing environmentally friendly systems that reduce the amount of logistical support to deployed forces while maintaining their ability to conduct combat operations. The ReGenerator is a self-contained power system that runs on an integrated 1.2 kilowatt solar array and wind power, which can provide continuous energy-efficient power in support of a Marine Forward Operating Base. The ReGenerator, a ZeroBase Energy, LLC commercial product, is tailored for military applications in collaboration with Raytheon. This product is also used to supplement the Tactical Quiet Generator to improve efficiency of fossil fuel usage. "Our solution provides a renewable energy system that can be advantageous to tactical deployments," said David Gulla, vice president, National and Theater Security Programs for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "Reducing the requirement for fuel delivery by truck convoy to deployed units keeps our warfighters out of potentially dangerous situations." The systems were tested in three phases: The first phase focused on testing renewable energy generation and was conducted at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. Testing during the second phase, focused on an Extended User Evaluation (EUE), was completed during Exercise African Lion in Morocco and Enhanced Mojave Viper at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif. EUE will continue in Afghanistan throughout the remainder of 2010 and 2011. Phase three testing, focused on improving generator efficiency, occurred at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.
earlier related report DRS is teamed with General Atomics (GA) to provide the proof-of-concept HED system under a contract awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in July of 2009. Completion of the design, construction and testing of the HED PM motor at DRS Power Technologies' facilities in Fitchburg and Hudson, Massachusetts is a major milestone in the development of the prototype. The DRS / GA HED system provides propulsion power at lower speeds by integrating the PM motor with the ship's main reduction gear. With this arrangement the ship can reduce the operating hours of its gas turbines, its primary power plant, and provide significant fuel savings. Each DDG 51 equipped with the HED system will be able to conserve thousands of barrels of fuel per year while increasing mission effectiveness and flexibility with longer on station times. Recently the PM motor was delivered to DRS Power and Controls Technology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where it will be integrated and tested with the HED System Converter, also designed and built by DRS Technologies. Integrated full-load testing of the system including control interfaces will be performed subsequently by General Atomics in Tupelo, Mississippi prior to delivery of the system to the Navy's Land Based Engineering Site (LBES) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. NAVSEA testing of the system at LBES is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2011 in preparation for installation of a proof-of-concept system on the USS Truxtun (DDG 103) for an "at-sea" demonstration in 2012. The successful completion of this motor is a major milestone for the program and the DRS/GA team."
