BAE Systems has received a U.S. Air Force contract of $3.9 million to provide engineering, training, and other services for the continued use of the company's Silver Fox unmanned aircraft systems.

The Silver Fox aircraft supports military operations during intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

"This contract is vital to supporting the warfighter," said Gordon Eldridge, acting vice president and general manager of aerospace solutions at BAE Systems.

"The Silver Fox systems have demonstrated their value with real time intelligence that has saved lives."

Each Silver Fox is a gas/electric-powered unmanned system, weighing about 30 pounds. It can carry electro-optical and infrared sensors, providing full-motion imagery for both day and night operations.

The Silver Fox carries small payloads and performs autonomous takeoffs and landings.

The contract was awarded by the Air Force Research Laboratory, based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

BAE Systems employees will provide services that include systems maintenance, engineering, and analysis, as well as logistics support and on-the-job training for Silver Fox operators.
