Britain's Ministry of Defense has amended its Maritime Support Delivery Framework contract with BAE systems to include Queen Elizabeth II carriers. The amendment carries the value of $91.5 million and is in effect until March 2019. The amendment also features a one-year extension option worth approximately $90 million. BAE Systems said it is now responsible for support services for all Royal Navy ships home-ported at Portsmouth Naval Base "We are the leader in complex warship support, and to be awarded a contract to support the QE Class aircraft carriers safeguards these skills in Portsmouth and the region for years to come," David Mitchard, managing director for Maritime Services at BAE Systems, said in a press release. "The Common Support Model represents a collaborative way of working, placing industry shoulder-to-shoulder with the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defense, and we are looking forward to implementing it across all classes of ships we support at Portsmouth." The support agreement is part of the new $1.3 billion Common Support Model announced by Defense Secretary Sir Michael Fallon on Tuesday. The CSM provides a framework for comprehensive support across the entire Royal Navy fleet of warships. The new HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier arrived in Portsmouth in August and will be commissioned into service later this year. HMS Prince of Wales will arrive in 2019 and be commissioned in 2020.
