British Sikh jailed for attack on retired Indian general
by Staff Writers
London (AFP) March 21, 2014

A Sikh man was jailed for 10 years in Britain on Friday for slashing the neck of the Indian general who oversaw the 1984 Amritsar Golden Temple assault.

Retired lieutenant general Kuldip Singh Brar, 78, was attacked as he walked through the West End district of London with his wife Meena in September 2012.

Lakhbir Singh, 26, was the fifth man to be sentenced for the attack after being convicted for grievous bodily harm with intent at Southwark Crown Court in London.

A gang of three men and a woman were jailed in December for their role in the attack.

The trial heard that the gang targeted Brar, himself a Sikh, in revenge for his leading role in Operation Blue Star against Sikh militants in Amritsar, northwest India, two decades ago which left at least 500 people dead.

Brar survived the knife attack, which left him with a 30-centimetre (12-inch) cut across his jaw.
