DD(X) Peripheral Vertical Launch System Validates Design, Mitigates Risk

LRLAP is a rocket-assisted, precision-guided munition designed to give the Navy�s next-generation destroyer, DD , a responsive fire-support capability of up to 100 nautical miles. The ERGM will be used in the Navy�s current 5-inch, Mk45, Mod 4 gun aboard Arleigh Burke-class ships and is intended to deliver fire support up to 63 nautical miles from shore. Each projectile is expected to cost roughly $35,000.

Yesterday marked another significant milestone in the design of the U.S. Navy's next-generation multi-mission destroyer, DD(X), when Northrop Grumman, supported by DD(X) National Team members Raytheon and United Defense Industries, conducted additional successful testing of the ship's revolutionary Peripheral Vertical Launching System (PVLS).

"The PVLS not only dominates the battlespace, it also keeps crewmembers safe by directing potential explosive events outward and away from the ship," says Brian Cuccias, Northrop Grumman vice president and DD(X) program manager. "The successful completion of this test event reaffirms the unequaled survivability DD(X) will bring to our Navy."

The Maximum Credible Detonation Event (MCDE) test conducted yesterday at the Aberdeen Test Center simulated an engagement with a maximum ordnance load in a single PVLS launcher. Preliminary analysis shows that the Northrop Grumman-designed-and-built structure has satisfied all Critical Technical Parameters specified for the test.

This successful test underpins a cornerstone of the DD(X) concept that ordnance stored in a PVLS module will not detonate during a worst-case scenario in an adjacent module with this DD(X) unique capability representing a quantum leap forward in warship survivability.

DD(X) distributes 80 missile cells in 20 reinforced launchers along the periphery of the ship. The PVLS releases and directs high energy from a magazine explosion away from the ship, markedly improving overall survivability.

In partnership with the United States Navy, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and United Defense are leading a premier National Team to design DD(X) - a revolutionary multi-mission destroyer. DD(X) technologies are currently in an advanced state of development and are destined to influence ship-design efforts around the world for the remainder of this century.

The National Team, which includes more than 100 U.S. companies from 45 states, understands the importance of the rapidly maturing DD(X) Program to our nation, and is proud of the historic role this vessel will play in the advancement of ship - and ship systems - design.

The DD(X) National Team has successfully completed more than a dozen incremental design-review milestones, highlighting the DD(X) National Team's commitment to staying on schedule and within cost, as well as the extraordinary maturity and discipline of the program's approach to integrating unprecedented advanced technologies into the platform.
