EADS And Thales To Supply Latest-Technology Missile Warner To A400M

"With the MIRAS missile warner, the A400M now has the most modern self-protection system in the world which will increase the mission effectiveness of the aircraft as well as the safety of the aircrews decisively", explained Bernhard Gerwert, CEO and President of EADS Defence Electronics.

Ulm, Germany (SPX) Sep 30, 2005
EADS Defence Electronics will equip the European transport aircraft A400M with its newly developed missile warning system MIRAS working on the latest infrared technology.

As announced by EADS on Wednesday, the company has been awarded the contract to deliver 85 missile warning systems from 2010.

The new product will be developed jointly by EADS Defence Electronics and Thales. MIRAS relies on the state-of-the-art infrared superlattice detector technology successfully developed by AIM Infrarot-Module GmbH, Heilbronn/Germany. Some work packages will be subcontracted to the Turkish company Aselsan as Turkey is a main partner in the A400M programme.

The Multi-Color Infra-Red Alerting Sensor (MIRAS) is the first missile warning system worldwide applying simultaneous, single-chip multi-color infrared detection technology which offers an unprecedented combination of detection probability, detection range and low false alarm rates.

In its A400M configuration the system is optimised for wide-body aircraft (mission-, transport-, tanker a/c) but EADS and Thales intend to offer it in the world market also to other platforms such as fighter a/c operating at high altitudes.

"With the MIRAS missile warner, the A400M now has the most modern self-protection system in the world which will increase the mission effectiveness of the aircraft as well as the safety of the aircrews decisively", explained Bernhard Gerwert, CEO and President of EADS Defence Electronics.

"With MIRAS EADS Defence Electronics completes its airborne missile warner product family which enables us to fulfill the whole scope of customer requirements today and in the future".

The overall self-protection system of the A400M is being designed under the system responsibility of EADS Defence Electronics. It features the Defensive Aids Computer, the MIRAS missile warner (both developed by EADS Defence Electronics), the ALR-400 radar warner receiver jointly produced by Indra and EADS Defence Electronics and a chaff/flare dispenser system.

It is planned to equip 85 of the 180 A400Ms covered by the A400M launch contract. An upgrade of this basic self-protection suite with other elements such as Laser DIRCM (Directed Infrared Counter-Measure System) is already foreseen as a second step.
