Eighth solider killed in Afghanistan on dark day for NATO Kabul (AFP) May 18, 2010 Two NATO soldiers were killed Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said, bringing to eight the total number to die in the country in less than 24 hours, after a massive suicide bombing in Kabul. ISAF said one solider was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED), the weapon of choice for Taliban. The other died in a small arms attack. The organisation did not give details of the exact location of either death, nor did it give the nationality of the two soldiers. According to a tally kept by AFP, based on figures provided by the independent icasualties.org website, 210 foreign soldiers have died in Afghanistan since the beginning of the year. Taliban-led militants have stepped up assaults on the Afghan government and its Western backers as part of their nine-year insurgency against the regime and 130,000 US-led foreign troops in the country. Tuesday was a bad day for NATO, with six soldiers -- five Americans and one Canadian -- killed in a devastating suicide bombing in the capital during morning rush hour. The attack, which was claimed by the Taliban, also killed 12 civilians and wounded 47 more, the government said.
