China successfully launched two experimental communication satellites, Smart SkyNet 1A and 1B, into medium-Earth orbit using a Long March 3B carrier rocket. The launch took place at 9:43 am from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province. This event marks the 21st space launch in China this year and the 521st flight in the Long March rocket series.

The satellites, developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology-a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp and the manufacturer of the satellites-were constructed for Tsing Shen Technology in Shanghai. This company is working on establishing a space-based broadband internet network through a constellation of satellites positioned in medium-Earth orbit.

The newly launched satellites are equipped with advanced technologies, including a multi-beam high-speed microwave link and a two-way inter-satellite laser link. These features are essential for the network's requirements. The satellites will soon commence trial operations aimed at establishing a direct data link between China and its research stations in Antarctica.
