For sale in Germany: Soviet nuclear warhead bunkers

Berlin (AFP) Aug 18, 2009
A former Soviet military base in eastern Germany including two bunkers used to store nuclear warheads during the Cold War has been put up for sale, an official said on Tuesday.

The 97-hectare (240-acre) Lychen II site in woodland 110 kilometres (70 miles) north of Berlin, also includes a shooting range and around 40 buildings, according to the BBG agency managing the sale for the state of Brandenburg.

"Interested parties have until August 31 to make offers," BBG official Gunnar Grossmann told AFP.

The buyer will be obliged to demolish many of the buildings that have fallen into disrepair since the withdrawal of Soviet troops after German unification in 1990, according to a prospectus from the agency.

The nuclear warheads were removed in 1992.

There is, however, a danger of unexploded ordnance at the shooting range, which was used to shoot pistols and machine guns and for throwing hand grenades, and there is also some asbestos. No asking price has been set.
