MarkLogic Corporation, a leading provider of information infrastructure software, has announced that it has been invited to demonstrate its custom mobile applications for warfighters at the "Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications (CSDA)" Digital Rodeo taking place at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Hosted by the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC), a Directorate of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), CSDA will showcase new mobile technology, including the latest industry developments in smartphone applications for soldier training, administrative tasks, and battlefield functions.

MarkLogic will demonstrate a variety of cutting-edge innovations and real-world applications including a tactical alerting application that notifies soldiers if an improvised explosive device (IED) detonates within five kilometers of their location.

In addition, MarkLogic will highlight innovative ways that the Army can use existing platforms currently used by commercial companies to meet their requirements.

"Today's mobile devices have the ability to deliver a broad range of interactive functionality that can be very valuable to warfighers in operational and tactical environments," said Randall Jackson, vice president of federal, MarkLogic.

"MarkLogic Server enables the Army to build powerful custom applications on mobile devices faster and more securely. Since data and information is provided in a way that is agnostic to the device, multiple smartphone formats are easily supported."

While mobile devices have the potential to enhance soldiers' effectiveness and efficiency, there are numerous challenges to leveraging these devices for military applications. Since mobile device user interfaces vary by manufacturer, the standard web interfaces do not always work optimally.

With much smaller screens than those on desktop computers, users see only a small portion of web pages at time. Moreover, mobile devices depend on a reliable connection to a wireless network and organizations must be aware of the differences among phone carriers in various parts of the world so mission critical information is effectively delivered.

In addition to addressing the challenges of mobile device deployment, MarkLogic can provide value-added features to optimize its use by warfighters.

Examples include geospatial capabilities to enable precise, location-aware information search and analysis, real-time alerting to enable immediate routing of newly arrived, topic-based information for users out in the field; and analytics capabilities to help users discover hidden relationships within information on an ad hoc basis.

With content enrichment capabilities, MarkLogic augments information by identifying known entities such as people, places and organizations, or by adding geospatial coordinates to named locations.
