German soldiers shoot dead Afghan civilians: military
Berlin (AFP) July 19, 2009 German soldiers shot dead two Afghan civilians and seriously injured two more Sunday when they opened fire on a vehicle speeding towards them, the German armed forces said. A pick-up carrying six people headed at high speed towards a German infantry post in the west of Chahar Dara district, northern Afghanistan, the military said in a statement. The soldiers at first fired warning shots but the driver of the pick-up did not change direction, so the soliders "had to shoot at the vehicle to force it to stop". A young man died at the scene and another person died later as a result of injuries. Two other occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured. "According to the information we have, the soldiers could only consider they were being attacked," the army said, adding the use of weapons was in accordance with guidelines. Germany currently has around 3,800 servicemen in Afghanistan as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force, and this figure will rise to 4,400 before the Afghan presidential elections in August. Thirty-five German soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the army deployed troops there in 2002. Share This Article With Planet Earth
