Germany rejects Kosovo partition: defence minister
Pristina (AFP) Oct 27, 2008 Germany opposed any partition of Kosovo and pledged its support to the newly independent country, German defence minister Franz Josef Jung said during a visit to Pristina on Monday. "We are for a united, stable and peaceful Kosovo, but not for partition which we consider a wrong option," Jung told reporters after a meeting with President Fatmir Sejdiu. Germany would continue to support Kosovo in the establishment and the development of the Kosovo security forces, to be launched in mid-2009, he added. Jung is also due to visit the German military contingent in southern Kosovo, which operates as part of the NATO-led peacekeeping operation there. Serbia has suggested a possible partition of part of northern Kosovo, where most of the 40,000 ethnic Serbs live. Serbian president Boris Tadic recently said that partition could be the ultimate solution if other options to solve the status issue failed. Kosovo, which is predominantly ethnic Albanian, declared independence from Serbia on February 17, since when 51 countries have recognised it. Serbia, Russia and the Kosovo Serbs all fiercely oppose the move. Community Email This Article Comment On This Article Share This Article With Planet Earth
