by Staff Writers
Frankfurt (AFP) April 18, 2013

German defence technology group Krauss-Maffei Wegmann said Thursday it has won a 1.89 billion euro ($2.5 billion) contract to supply tanks and artillery systems to Qatar.

"The emirate of Qatar is in the process of modernising its land forces, comprising some 8,500 soldiers, which operate a fleet of tanks and artillery that is in parts more than 40 years old," the German group said in a statement.

Qatar will take delivery of 24 artillery systems PzH 2000 and 62 LEOPARD2 main battle tanks.

The total value of the contract was 1.89 billion euros, including peripheral equipment, training installations and additional services.

"The systems delivered to Qatar by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann are intended to progressively replace the emirate's outdated artillery and tanks of French and South African origin, which will be scrapped," the statement added.
