House subcommittee supports 2.7% pay hike for troops by Kyle Barnett Washington DC (UPI) Jun 29, 2021 Lawmakers and the White House have agreed on actions to raise the salaries of all federal workers and military personnel of 2.7% for 2022. The House Armed Services Committee approved the wage hike as part of the 2022 spending package for the military, raises that would affect about 1.35 million troops, Military Times reported. The pay raise of 2.7 percent is in line with estimates of wage growth in the private sector next year, officials said. The $706 billion deal on defense spending is still far from becoming law, but the leaders of the Democratic House and administration have agreed on the level of funding. Young troops will receive an increase of about $790 per year, older soldiers and junior officers with the raise will have about $1,400 more per year and the highest increase will go to employees with over 12 years of service. Another bill would apply the same rate increase of 2.7% to 2.1 million federal employees that are not serving in the military. While a House subcommittee last week agreed on the raise, National Treasury Employees Union president Tony Reardon said in a statement the 2.7% is still up for debate. Cost-of-living increases for federal retirees also are determined separately, reflecting the same inflation measure used for Social Security benefits. Though, as noted by members of Congress considering a military pay raise, the 2.7% raise for other government employees is in line with wage growth in the private sector next year.
