Insitu to support Navy's ScanEagle UAV system
by James Laporta
Washington (UPI) Dec 19, 2017

Insitu Inc. has been awarded a modified contract by the U.S. Navy for services to support the ScanEagle Unmanned Aviation System, an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platform.

The deal, announced Monday by the Department of Defense, is worth more than $22.7 million under the terms of a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract, meaning that if there are potential overrun costs on the contract accumulated by Insitu they will not be reimbursed by the U.S. government.

The ScanEagle is an unmanned aerial vehicle with a 10-foot wingspan that provides intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance data with high endurance.

The unmanned aerial system can hover over a target area for over 24 hours at a maximum altitude of 19,500 feet and carry a variety of sensor payloads and other mission gear. It is designed to be launched from makeshift sites using a catapult and a hook-and-line recovery line, eliminating the need for a runway.

Monday's contract will directly support the U.S. Navy's Special Warfare fleet operations, the Pentagon said.

Work on the contract will be performed in Afghanistan and in Washington state, and is expected to be competed in September 2018.
