Both Israel and Hezbollah faced accusations on Monday of breaching the truce, which came into force on Wednesday to end a war that has killed thousands in Lebanon and sparked mass displacements on both sides of the border.
While the ceasefire has largely brought fighting to a halt, Israel launched strikes against targets it says were violating the agreement.
On Monday, Hezbollah said it had launched an attack targeting an Israeli position in "the occupied hills of Kfar Shouba", in a disputed part of the border area between Israel and Lebanon.
The Israeli army said that Hezbollah had launched two projectiles towards one of its posts in the area of Har Dov, Israel's term for the disputed Shebaa Farms.
After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah of a "serious violation" and vowed to "respond forcefully".
"We are determined to uphold the ceasefire and respond to any violation by Hezbollah, no matter how minor or serious," he said.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also vowed a "harsh response".
Shortly afterwards, the Israeli military said it was "striking terror targets in Lebanon".
Lebanon's official National News Agency reported strikes on areas of south Lebanon, where Hezbollah has long held sway, that are located around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the border with Israel.
- 'Aggressive actions' -
Earlier in the day, Lebanon's powerful parliament speaker Nabih Berri, had accused Israel of violating the truce.
"The aggressive actions carried out by Israeli occupation forces... represent a flagrant violation of the terms of the ceasefire agreement," said Lebanon's powerful parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who helped mediate the truce on behalf of ally Hezbollah.
The fighting escalated after Israel moved its focus from Gaza to Lebanon in September to secure its northern border from Hezbollah attacks, dealing the Iran-backed Shiite Muslim movement a sequence of stunning blows.
Also Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar in a call of "the need for all sides to respect the ceasefire in Lebanon", the foreign ministry said.
Saar rejected accusations that Israel had violated the truce.
"We hear claims that Israel is violating the ceasefire understandings in Lebanon. On the contrary! Israel is enforcing them in response to Hezbollah's violations, which demand immediate action," he said in a statement.
He also said Hezbollah had attempted to move weapons in southern Lebanon and their presence "south of the Litani river is the most basic violation of the understandings".
Under the deal, Hezbollah must withdraw its fighters from areas south of the river, and dismantle its military infrastructure in the south.
As part of the agreement, the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers will deploy in southern Lebanon as the Israeli army withdraws over a period of 60 days.
- 'Threats' -
A committee involving France, UN peacekeepers, Israel, Lebanon and chaired by the United States is tasked with maintaining communication between the various parties and ensuring violations are identified and dealt with to avoid any escalation.
"We ask the technical committee formed to monitor the implementation of this agreement where it stands on ongoing violations... that have exceeded 54 breaches," Berri added, urging it to "oblige Israel to stop its violations and withdraw from territories it occupies".
The United States said Monday it believed that a ceasefire was still holding in Lebanon and that it was looking at potential violations.
Israel escalated its campaign against Hezbollah in late September after nearly a year of cross-border exchanges launched by the militant group in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas and its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
Earlier on Monday, Lebanon's health ministry said an Israeli strike killed one person in the country's south, while the Lebanese army said an Israeli drone wounded a soldier in the east.
The Israeli military said it was "aware of reports regarding a soldier from the Lebanese military who was injured in one of the strikes and the incident is under investigation".
Israel's army said was responding to "several acts by Hezbollah in Lebanon that posed a threat to Israeli civilians in violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon".
Israeli-American IDF soldier believed held hostage confirmed dead

An Israeli Defense Forces soldier originally from Long Island, New York and previously thought to be held hostage by the militant group Hamas is dead, Israeli officials confirmed on Monday.
Officials believe Omer Neutra was killed during the terror attack carried out by Hamas on Israeli civilians on Oct. 7, 2023, the country's defense minister, Israel Katz said on X.
"I would like to send my deepest condolences to the parents of the late Captain Omar Neutra, Ronan and Orna, his family and friends. Omar, who grew up in New York and chose to immigrate to Israel out of a deep sense of mission, fell in a heroic battle near Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, and was kidnapped to the Gaza Strip by the Hamas murderers," Katz said in Hebrew and translated to English using Google.
"To the Nautra family and to all the families of the abductees, I would like to say on behalf of the State of Israel -- the return of the abductees is our most important mission and we will do everything to fulfill it. Omar will remain engraved in the heart of the nation forever. May his memory be blessed."
Katz, who was appointed Israeli Minister of Defense last month, did not elaborate on how the country determined Neutra, an IDF tank commander, was dead.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who met with Neutra's parents in March, shared her condolences on X.
"We just learned that this prayer couldn't be answered for the family of Omer Neutra. Omer was barbarically murdered by Hamas in the Oct. 7 attacks," Hochul said.
"We pray that his body can be returned to his family, who have been speaking out for him & all hostages since that horrific day."
The 21-year-old's body is still being held by Hamas after being taken following the Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that saw approximately 1,200 Israelis killed and 251 people taken hostage.
The militant group continues holding 101 hostages in Gaza, according to Israeli officials, with 97 of those kidnapped during the terrorist attack on Oct. 7, 2023.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced increasing pressure to bring the remaining hostages home.
Last week, Neutra's parents told CNN in an interview they believed their son was still alive and were still hoping for his release.
Raised in New York, Neutra was one of seven Americans believed kidnapped by Hamas during the Oct. 7 incursion into Israel from Gaza. Officials have now confirmed four of the seven are dead.
Neutra's parents recently met with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House.
Biden on Monday said he was "devastated" to learn of Neutra's death.
"Our hearts are heavy today. Jill and I are devastated and outraged to learn of the death of Omer Neutra, an American citizen, whose body Hamas has apparently been holding since they killed him during their brutal terrorist attack on October 7," Biden said in a White House statement, adding Neutra had hoped to return to the United States to attend college.
"Less than a month ago, Omer's mother and father joined me at the White House to share the pain they've endured as they prayed for the safe return of their son -- pain no parent should ever know. They told me how Omer's grandparents were Holocaust survivors and how their family's strength and resilience has been carried through the generations.
"During this dark hour -- as our nation joins Omer's parents, brother, and family in grieving this tragic loss -- we pray to find strength and resilience. And to all the families of those still held hostage: We see you. We are with you. And I will not stop working to bring your loved ones back home where they belong."
