Brussels (AFP) April 20, 2011 NATO on Wednesday urged civilians in Libya to avoid forces loyal to strongman Moamer Kadhafi to ensure "greater success" for allied air strikes. "Our planners and pilots go to very great lengths to ensure we do all we can to reduce the risk to civilians when we attack targets, but the risk cannot be reduced to zero," the general in charge of operations said in a statement. "Civilians can assist NATO by distancing themselves from Kadhafi regime forces and equipment whenever possible," Lieutenant-General Charles Bouchard said. "Doing this will allow NATO to strike those forces and equipment with greater success and with the minimum risk to civilians," the statement said. "In the next few days, we will maintain the pressure on regime front-line troops to show NATO is resolute in its determination to protect civilians. We will continue to strike at regime forces as long as they continue to attack their own people," Bouchard added. "NATO air forces continue to degrade the Kadhafi regime's ability to harm civilians. Today we attacked ammunition bunkers used to supply troops, as well as tanks in the area of Misrata. "This campaign has been successful. We are seeing the results in reduced activity in regime-held areas. But Kadhafi forces continue to cause harm to civilians in the Misrata and other areas," the statement said. Also Wednesday, rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil told French television after meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that the rebels expected "major strikes by the coalition" against pro-Kadhafi forces. "We are sure that Kadhafi will be overthrown sooner or later, but we want it to be as soon as possible," Jalil told France 24. Asked whether the conflict would be won by force or negotiation, the former justice minister said: "We expect there to be major strikes by the coalition, then Libyans can reach a solution."
