Obama sends Afghan war report to Congress

by Staff Writers
Washington (AFP) March 31, 2010
US President Barack Obama sent Congress his report on the war in Afghanistan and cited no change in strategy or budget, the White House said Wednesday just days after his secret visit there.

The classified report is mandated by law to be presented every six months by the president to Congress, which authorizes funds for military spending.

"My administration completed a thorough policy review last November, and I announced a new approach at West Point on December 1, 2009," Obama said in a Tuesday letter to the House and Senate committees on armed services, appropriations and the judiciary.

"As with the development of that policy, we have continued to consult closely with the Congress on the implementation of this new approach. We are now implementing this policy and do not believe further adjustments are required at this time," he said.

Progress in Afghanistan has been "too slow," Obama said Monday after returning from his surprise visit to the war-torn nation where he met with President Hamid Karzai and rallied US forces engaged in the battle against extremists.
